Meet Your Fisherman - Kai Rick

Wednesday means it's time to meet your fisherman! Kai Rick works with Drayton Harbor Oyster Company to bring you the freshly harvested oysters you buy at the market.

Kai is a lifelong resident to Whatcom County with a passion for all things involving the ocean. Growing up, his family spent a ton of time at Sehmiahmoo where they would crab, clam, and grill up oysters on the fire. His love for the ocean only grew stronger, and

one day while fishing on the Nooksack River, Kai realized that he deeply valued keeping resources, like salmon and other wild food sources, healthy and abundant--not only for him, but for his children and generations to come. This led him to complete a degree at Bellingham Technical College's fisheries and aquaculture program.

Since then, Kai has worked in various aquaculture projects from Washington to Alaska. He previously worked for Drayton Harbor Oyster company but took a break for a while to work for the Port of Bellingham, but realized he wanted to return to his true love of aquaculture.

Kai firmly believes in promoting sustainability and wants to see the beautiful Pacific Northwest thrive to its fullest potential.
